We're Ear for You!

Updated: Jan 11, 2023

Ear infections (also known as Otitis Media) are one of the most common conditions seen in the world today. Did you know that approximately 75% of children experience at least one episode of Otitis Media by their third birthday? That does not include individuals that suffer their first infection after age 3, which means that over ¾ of people will endure ear infections throughout their lifetime!

Ear infections are often characterized by pain in the ear, a feeling of fullness or fluid build up within the ear, muffled hearing and even restlessness, irritability or lack of desire to eat or sleep. Some of the more common risk factors can be found here. Although Otitis Media most commonly affects infants and children, it can be present in adults too. Check out this article published by Columbia University to familiarize yourself with ear infection presentation specific to adults. Ear infections can be caused by a variety of things such as bottle feeding (drinking while laying flat), upper respiratory tract infections, lowered immunity, exposure to irritants (cigarette smoke), Eustachian Tube malformations or dysfunction and certain birth defects.

Otitis Media is often treated with antibiotics or surgery. However, there are several natural remedies for managing and resolving acute and chronic ear infections. Some of these remedies include cool or warm compresses, hydrogen peroxide, proper application of various oils (i.e. garlic oil, olive oil) within the ear canal, consumption of ginger (+ other anti-inflammatory foods) and, of course, chiropractic adjustments! If left untreated, Otitis Media can lead to speech and language disabilities, rupture of the eardrum and even permanent hearing loss.

While many of the recommended alternatives are deemed as generally safe, it is always recommended to consult your doctor prior to implementing these measures. If you or anyone you know has questions or concerns regarding ear infections and how chiropractic care can help, give us a call!
